Volunteer, engineer and heritage chief: Andy Savage's life on the rails

Andy Savage started working on the Ffestiniog railway as a 15 year old, loading rock from cuttings using a shovel, to help extend the line from 14 to 18km. He has been a volunteer ever since and often spends weekends there as an electrician. In the intervening 40 years Andy built a successful career in the railways, becoming deputy chief inspector of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch before ending up as chief executive of the Railway Heritage Trust.
