Close by to the M49 is the port of Bristol, which deals in a wide and "eclectic" mix of cargo and has plans to build a ￡1Bn deep sea container terminal in the Severn Estuary. Bristol Port comprises Avonmouth Dock to the north of the River Avon and Royal Portbury Dock to the south. Commercial vessels used to enter docks In Bristol city centre but difficulties with navigating the river - which has a tidal range of up to 14m between high and low water - led to the opening of Avonmouth Dock in 1877.
