摘要

I am writing in regard to an article by Dr. S. H. Bell and colleagues, appearing in the June 2010 issue of ACER (Bell et al, 2010). These authors brought a contemporary view to an observation by W. C. Sullivan, a police surgeon in England, 110 years ago (Karp, 2011; Sullivan, 1899). Sullivan (1899) observed an increased rate of both mortality and epilepsy among children born to alcoholic women when compared to children of their nonalcoholic siblings. From this data he concluded that that alcohol in utero did indeed have an untoward affect on the fetus.
