In the final weeks of the cold, snowy winter of 2015, New Hampshire-based arborist Lee Gilman had a problem with ice dams on the sloped roof of his own home and turned to the Arctic Steam-er. He also made ice dam removal a part of his business plan."That was our big snow year," Gilman recalls, and with the storms sequenced with little to no thawing between them, ice dams developed on roofs as snow banks grew huge down below. "If the weather pattern is right, they can build pretty fast."Gilman's intent was to clear his roof without damaging it, a tricky proposition given the traditional methods of "picking, chopping, cutting, sawing, pounding and chemicals ... all are not roof-safe."
