Technical experts wh< develop training materials to recogniz wood-decay processes in living trees ar frequently forest pathologists. Much of th history of forest pathology was to suppoi production of sound, high-quality timbei That heritage is passed on in terms used b; arborists today that are derived from timbe production, such as "defect" and "degrade. These terms are used for genuinely adverse conditions such as cracks and seams. Un fortunately, the terms are also sometime applied to positive features that contribub to tree recovery and stability, such as re sponse growth and woundwood formation.Mushrooms and other fungal fruitinj bodies are signs of infection. However such infections are not necessarily the en emy of healthy and safe landscapes.
