The following conspectus serves as a personal account of the research in the Stephenson group pertaining to photoredox catalysis. Relevant literature precedent as well as influential and related work from other research groups will also be discussed. We have structured this review according to the two modes of single-electron-transfer quenching (reductive and oxidative quenching) that the excited state of the photocatalyst can undergo and to the important applications that can result from these quenching pathways.
