Asymmetric N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) Catalyzed Acyl Anion Reactions

In recent decades, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been shown to facilitate a wide variety of nontraditional asymmetric transformations. This article reviews the utility of these nucleophilic species in the generation of acyl anion equivalents from aldehydes and their application in the Stetter, α-redox, and cascade-catalysis reactions.
