摘要

Many organic molecules are inherently modular in their constitution. With respect to the molecules found in living systems, this modularity is a direct consequence of the fact that nearly all biosynthetic systems are based on the iterative coupling of bifunctional building blocks. For example, polypeptides are built from amino acids, oligonucleotides are derived from nucleotide monomers, and oligosaccharides are stitched together from individual sugar units.
