In my last Painted Memories we looked at Surface Coatings through the eyes of our colonial forefathers and the challenges the early settlers in Australasia faced in producing and applying the coatings they required.My extract was from a publication produced almost 140 years ago. For this edition of Painted Memories I will go back considerably further in time and publish extracts,translated from Latin,from the earliest Surface Coatings reference book known in Europe,”Theophilus De Diversis Artibus(Theophilus On Divers Arts)”byTheophilus Presbyter. The original Manuscript was written byTheophilus Presbyter,sometime between 1100 and 1140.The Manuscript consists of three books,the first book being concerned with paint and paint ingredient manufacture,painting techniques,glues and inks.
