In my Painted Memories of October 2017,I discussed the innovations that brought about the first water borne emulsion paints.This development was spurred by shortages arising from World War 2 as the main bulk paint raw materials of the time,Linseed Oil and Mineral Spirits,were diverted to the war effort.Further development in water borne emulsions came about as a by-product in the search for a synthetic rubber substitute,as there was a critical shortage of natural latex rubber brought about by both increased demand for the war effort and decreased supply as major rubber producing areas fell under Japanese occupation and trade routes were disrupted.
