Having made a new band brake for the winch, Andrew Hall sets about fitting a lever to operate it. Although I have seen other Fordson E27Ns equipped with a Hesford winch similar to mine, there are some oddities about mine. I know nothing of the previous history of my tractor, having acquired it about seven years ago. Strangely, both the clutch- and brake-operating levers had been removed, rendering the winch inoperable, and the drum had been painted in Fordson blue, covering the sheared off bolts that would normally secure the winch cable. This leads me to believe that it hadn't been used since being fitted to the tractor, and perhaps somebody had given up on the project.
