Image Processing for the Reading and Decoding of Block-Codes on Steel Slabs

This paper presents a code reader which can be used in conjunction with a block-code stamping system. The code can be stamped and read on both hot and cold steel blocks. Two different solutions to the reading of the code are presented, based on the light sectioning and intensity measurements, respectively. The image processing uses non-linear equalization and contouring to detect initial estimations for the code points. The contours are classified with the help of a circle fitting algorithm. Finally the projection of the detected points onto the code plane is determined.
