Blasting fumes in underground mines are a major health hazard for miners. Especially nitrogen oxides and particularly nitrogen dioxide can be present in high concentrations in underground air. To prepare for a large measurement campaign the currently available direct reading instruments for the relevant gases have been evaluated extensively. The results of this survey are presented. For the actual measurements, which have been performed in a German potash mine, electrochemical cells have been selected and their results are given. Special emphasis is put on a newly developed modell ("Workplace-Exposure-Profile", WEP) to evaluate short term exposure.
