This paper presents the details of design and development of a signal conditioning unit (SCU) for the acquisition of acoustic emission (AE) signals from metallic materials. Acoustic emission is the phenomenon of sound wave generation in materials undergoing deformation and fracture processes. The proposed SCU is a basic building block employed to interface a wide range of sensor signals to provide an optimal level for the next stage processing and to analyze. The piezoelectric sensor is used for the detection of AE signals in this development. An integrated prototype SCU has been fabricated, assembled and validated in the laboratory by acquiring AE signals generated during pencil lead break tests on a stainless steel plate. The performance of the in-house developed SCU has been compared with the commercially available one, and the results are presented in this paper.
