MIXED BAG FOR US FLUE-CURED

The 2017 US flue-cured tobacco growing season was a mixed bag. For some growers it held tricks; for others, some treats were found. The harvest is over by now but it hasn't been easy, as TJI correspondent Rocky Womack heard from growers.What a year it has been. Better said, this growing season has been a challenge. For most growers, the 2017 US flue-cured season was filledwith too much rain in the early phase and a brief dry period that put leaf under stress. For others, steady and much needed rain fell late in the season to produce an unexpectedly decent crop. Some growers grew two to three different crops because of thedelayed planting, and those in the growingregions of Florida and Georgia had to deal with the threat and damage inflicted by hurricanes and tropical storms.
