2017 Outfield Variety Trials Report

Every year outfield variety tests are conducted on grower farms throughout the industry to encompass different soil types and the different regions that make up the sugar belt. The outfield tests represent the final three years of the 12-year varietydevelopment program. These tests include released commercial varieties used as checks for comparison and experimental varieties that are nearing released status. This report is a summary of the yield performance of these varieties during the 2017 harvestseason. All aspects of the outfield testing program are performed cooperatively through the three-way agreement between the American Sugar Cane League, the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. Thirty-seven tests were mechanically harvested across twelve locations for the 2017 harvest year (Table 1).
