Feds Legislate Marine Protected Areas & Banish Oil & Gas + Mining from Region

In late April, federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, announced a 12,000 square km stretch of ocean off the southern coast of Newfoundland and Labrador - called the Laurentian Channel Marine Protected area - as Canada's newest marine protected area. It also snuck in an edict banning all oil and gas, mining, dumping, and bottom trawling (an industrial fishing technique that indiscriminately scrapes the bottom of the ocean surface) in marine protected areas.
