Lamprolonchaea smaragdi (Walker, 1849) (Diptera: Lonchaeidae) newly established in Los Angeles County, California: first record for North America

The exotic lance fly Lamprolonchaea smaragdi (Walker, 1849), native to the Old World, is recorded for the first time for North America from multiple specimens, present at two different locations in Los Angeles County, California over the last three years (2014-2016). This species has the potential to become a pest on crops, especially tomatoes. Observations are provided on male-dominated swarming behavior in this species.
