Sapper Geology: Part 4. Royal Engineer Specialist Advisory Team Geologists

The first three parts in this series of articles were published in the RE Journal in 1993: 1. Part 1 (Rose & Hughes, 1993a) summarized the use of geologists by the Royal Engineers in both world wars - a story amplified in articles elsewhere (Rose & Rosenbaum, 1993a,b) and in later volumes of the Journal (Rose & Pareyn, 1996a,b; Rose & Willig, 2002; Rose, 2005; Rose & Clatworthy, 2007). 2. Part 2 (Rose & Hughes, 1993b) described how a Pool of Geologists was founded in the Territorial Army postwar to preserve geotechnical expertise within the Corps, and the role of these geologists as the reserve army transformed in the years 1949 to 1967. 3. Part 3 (Rose & Hughes, 1993c) described how the Pool of Geologists was merged with the Engineer Works Pool of Officers to create the Engineer Specialist Pool (ESP) of the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve in 1967, and the role of its geologists until the ESP became the Royal Engineers Specialist Advisory Team (Volunteers) (RESAT) of the Territorial Army (TA) in 1988.
