Gus Sinclair was educated at Christ's College, Finchley and RMA Sandhurst, Intake 1A, and was commissioned into the Corps on 21 October 1948. Following YO training, he was posted to 27 Engineer Regiment, part of 6th Armd Div Engrs, BAOR. In 1954, although the war there was over, he was posted to Korea, where he became Adjutant of 28 Engineer Regiment, retaining this role when the Regiment returned to Salisbury Plain. He remained there until 1956 when the Regiment went to Christmas Island to support Operation Grapple, the British testing of the hydrogen bomb. He was appointed Adjutant for the entire garrison until he returned to the UK in 1957.
