The Necessity for Engineer Intelligence to Engineer Commanders in War, and How it may be Obtained

Reprinted from the March 1923 Edition of the REJ and was, at the time, considered to he one of the best pieces to be written by a junior officer in the post-war period. The lessons identified here as just as valid today as at the time of writing, correctly highlighting the changes that the introduction of tanks and aircraft would make to the battlefield and the engineer intelligence requirement. Charles de Lisle Gaussen was born on !.8.1896. He enlisted into the Royal Engineers in Feb 1915. He reached the rank of Brigadier in 1948 and retired as an Honorary Major General 1950. In addition to his MC, awarded in the great war, he was mentioned in despatches 3 times, in 1917, 1918 and 1941. His final posts were as Engineer in Chief India 1947. Deputy Engineer in Chief at the War Office 1948-1949. He retired in 1950. He became Bursar of'Welbeck College.
