I have been an avid user of the StackShot since the year Cognisys brought it to market in 2011. The first commercial automated rail, it remains the Rolls Royce of electronic focusing rails as a complete system designed for repetitive focus stacking. Due to its high cost a number of people have DIY versions of an auto rail with a stepper motor although the programming of stack control can be the intimidating part. There are several websites that help you build your own, e.g. www.diyphotography.net. In the last 7 years my StackShot has seen an almost weekly use and accompanies me on most trips and expeditions with a small lead-acid battery for field use. It is with this heavy use in mind and a desire to have two auto rails that I have been researching possible alternatives although I should stress I still highly rate the StackShot.
