摘要

By the beginning of the 19th century a large volume of trade was passing through the port of Liverpool and the population grew rapidly and continued to grow throughout the century. Liverpool is one of the major cities in England and was a major international port of the British Empire serving, at different times, the West Indies, North America, India and the Far East. It gained city status in 1880. A mixed population including large numbers of Chinese and Irish settled in Liverpool and helped to make it a diverse and vibrant city.
