The distribution of Drosophila suzukii, Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) was studied by members of the Quekett Microscopical Club (QMC) plus an after-school club. 51 harvests from 32 individuals were collated and analysed for total insect catch, number of fruit flies, number of fruit flies that were SWD and proportion of male and female SWD. Parameters included in the study were: Harvest date over a six week period from October to end of November 2016, location by postcode, location by region within the UK, and male:female SWD ratios. The highest harvests of fruit flies and SWD from domestic locations were found in the East of England. This region also had the highest proportion of SWD relative to total fruit fly catch. Male: female SWD ratios averaged 1:1 (50%:50%) over the three regions, East of England, Midlands, and South East. The study demonstrated that screening for SWD was an activity that could be done with local materials by QMC microscopists and school students under supervision.
