Anyone who processes aquatic samples for microscopic examination will, at some stage, find themselves with a collection of mixed specimens and rubbish. This is inevitable, given the amount of material that gets caught in nets or scoops. The larger bits are easily removed, either manually, or by repeated sieving with reducing mesh sizes. As the process progresses, the sample volume usually reduces so as to be manageable in a petri-dish.
