It is sometimes difficult to trace the provenance of a microscope, the owners often disappear from records and in only some cases can we be certain that a microscope belonged to a named individual as is the case with many early stands including one of Joseph Sinel (1). However, the manufacturer of the instrument can be identified more easily as their name and often the retail premises can be found somewhere on the microscope and catalogues have been issued.
