摘要

My microscopy began with a present of a metal ‘pen’ which was really a pocket microscope to take everywhere. This encouraged my interest in natural history and in my teens I was given a brass Beck microscope, single tube, with interchangeable eyepieces and objectives. On returning from my first term at Trinity College Cambridge I found my parents had sold the Beck and also my bicycle as ‘no longer necessary'.
