Another year comes to an end, and another issue of the Quekett Journal of Microscopy comes to fruition! I have decided, after several years now, that the role of the Editor is a strange one. One of the main benefits of membership for me has always been the ‘thud’ of a heavy envelope dropping through the letterbox, as an eagerly anticipated copy of the Journal arrives, full of interesting articles, and I always had the excitement of flicking through and finding something that just had to be read instantly. As Editor, I now dread that 'thud' as the latest copy arrives, because my anticipation is now replaced in this role with trepidation, for the mistakes I have missed during proof-reading! However, I now have a much more 'continuous' stream of material across the year being submitted for the Journal from our erstwhile contributors, and I have the absolute pleasure in communicating with the authors to get their submissions ready for publication. And what always amazes me is the diversity, knowledge and enthusiasm of our authors. I know personally it is not always an easy task to write an article or paper for publication and it does sometimes require a dogged determination to see it through, but I hope for all concerned it is also rewarding, both sharing that knowledge with the current generation, and placing it on record for the future.
