摘要

Chromatic aberration was a serious problem in the early years of light microscopy [1]. Axial chromatic aberration causes different wavelengths to focus at different depths in the optical axis, while transverse aberration across the optical field may produce chromatic fringes around an object. Problems increase as magnification is increased. The early history of light microscopy was dominated by inventions to correct for chromatic aberration, mostly driven by improvements to microscope objectives, but requiring equal consideration to eyepieces and the remainder of the optical axis -the key feature being to use layers of different types of glass, each having a different refractive index to correct for the other layers. There is a vast literature on this subject, ranging from Nikon's intuitive interactive tutorial [2] to Pluta's physics [3].
