What Does 'World Class' Mean?

The show theme of the 2020 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show last February was "World Class Minerals." The Show Committee thought that "World Class Minerals" would be an effective theme from a marketing standpoint, promising displays of spectacular, top-quality mineral specimens. And they were certainly right, but apparently a whole lot of people still weren't sure what "world class" actually meant, and which specimens would qualify as examples illustrating the theme. So, before the show, for the first time that I can recall, exhibits chairman Peter Megaw issued a one-page explanation to accompany the application forms sent out to potential exhibitors (it was later reprinted in the Westward Look Show program). He titled it: "So what does world class minerals mean???" In effect, his little essay amounts to an editorial, one that we can have some fun discussing.
