A brief history of Mineral Collecting in the Pacific Northwest

Prospecting for minerals in the Pacific Northwest began, at least in modern times, when Lewis and Clark's expedition pushed through to the Pacific Coast in 1806. The two explorers picked up minerals wherever they could, building a collection which they presented to President Thomas Jefferson upon their return to the East; their specimens, donated by Jefferson, ended up mostly in Charles Wilson Peale's Museum in Philadelphia.
