FOOD AND FEEDING HABIT OF CYPRINUS CARPIO VAR. COMMUNIS (LIN.) (CYPRINIDAE: CYPRINIFORMES)

Cyprinus carpio (Linn.) (Cyprinidae: Cyprinifornies) is locally called as carpu. This fish is found in ponds, haors, and inundated floodplains throughout Bangladesh. It is cultured in ponds. It is a native of the temperate region of Asia, especially China. The Department of Fisheries, the Govt. of the then Pakistan introduced this species in this part of the world from Thailand in 1960. No published information is available on the food and feeding habit of C. carpio in Bangladesh. Survey of availableliterature reveals that works on the food and feeding habits of different fishes have been done by many workers like Moffet and Hunt (1943), Khan (1947), Hynes (1950), Alikunhi (1966), Sarig (1966), Dewan and Saha (1979), Nargis and Hossain (1987), Bhuiyan and Haque (1984), Bhuiyan and Islam (1991), and others. This paper deals with the feeding intensity and food habit of C. carpio.
