Istvan Urban's book, Vertical and Horizontal Ridge Augmentation, presents key aspects of surgical preparation of deficient soft and hard tissue sites prior to dental implant placement. The author aims to share his clinical experience and provide clinical tips to other clinicians, in particular young clinicians. The first five chapters of the book cover basic surgical setup, materials, intraoral bone harvesting techniques, and local anatomy, although this book is far from a basic text book. The reader is required to have an understanding of the fundamental principles of guided bone regeneration techniques. In the remaining chapters, Urban uses a comprehensive presentation of cases to illustrate an array of surgical techniques for augmenting varying defects in different locations of the mouth. The book is well written, succinct and clear to understand. The cases presented are well documented with lovely descriptive photographs. The lessons learnt section for each case is the author's critique of the case. These provide useful clinical tips and advice to the reader, of good and not so good aspects of the treatment. The treatment protocol and procedures used were supported by scientific evidence, which was provided for the readers' reference. This book is ambitious and inspiring with incredible outcomes for some very severe defects. These need to be viewed with some caution. The author has extensive clinical experience and talent, so many clinicians may be unlikely to achieve the displayed results. The simple and logical presentation of the cases in this book may oversimplify the technically challenging nature of this type of treatment. One of the final chapters, complications of bone ridge augmentation, reminds readers that this treatment in not infallible. Overall, this book provides an extensive array of techniques and clinical applications for augmenting bone prior to dental implants. It certainly is a must read for any clinician embarking on bone augmentation procedures.
