This is an unusual book. In the author's own words, he seeks to explain what it is that 'makes things dance in the dazzling variety of patterned ways that we see in every tradition of decorative art'. On one level, this is an attractive 'coffee table' book with dozens of colour plates. But it is far more than this; the ambitious aim is to show how the author has created these images using ideas from mathematics. Readers must therefore be prepared to work hard if they are to understand all of the techniques used.
