Preparing your honeybee colonies for winter is one of the most difficult things you will do as a beginner. But why is it so difficult? It is because every beekeeper does it differently. When it comes to preparing bees for winter, there are as many ways to do it as there are beekeepers. There are no hard and fast rules, and there are so many variables that affect the outcome, some that we can control and others that we cannot. And all of those together will determine if our colonies survive, thrive ordie over the winter months. Once you have done all that you can to ensure a successful wintering, it is nothing more than a waiting game and a damn good lesson in patience, as you will have a long and anxious wait until the first inspection in spring to see how it went.
