Managing a Small Wood in Derbyshire

Rodney Helliwell shares his experience of bringing into management a small area of self-sown woodland close to his home.Some 15 years ago I persuaded the owners of a limestone quarry to sell 0.8ha of land on the other side of the road from our house. The main part of the land that we purchased had been used as a tipping area for waste material from the quarry, ranging from limestone chippings to slabs of tarmac and large boulders, with little recognisable 'soil'. An aerial view dated July 1971 shows this area still in active use, with a haul road for quarry vehicles running through it, and with about 30% of the area carrying trees or bushes.
