Global Travel: What to Know Before They Go

The pretravel consultation presents an opportunity for nurse practitioners to promote the health and safety of individual patients and the communities to which they return. Nurse practitioners are responsible for education regarding disease transmission and avoiding illness and for providing immunotherapy and chemoprophylaxis to the traveler. Providers must establish duration, location, and motivation for travel, the patient's health status, and the living arrangements while away, all of which determine whether special actions are required.
