Nonoccupational Postexposure Prophylaxis: An Essential Tool for HIV Prevention

Previous progress of antiretroviral HIV prevention efforts focusing on preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and treatment as prevention (TasP) has plateaued in recent years. Until prevention efforts expand, nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis (nPEP) is another antiretroviral intervention that people can use after a potential HIV exposure to reduce their risk of infection and should be offered in outpatient settings as a way to prevent new HIV infections and bridge people to future prevention, like PrEP. The purpose of this article is to equip nurse practitioners with the information to develop a practice-level program to deliver nPEP to patients in need of urgent HIV prevention.
