Screening for Pancreatic Cancer in Individuals With New-onset Diabetes Mellitus

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is 1 of the deadliest cancers, having a 5-year survival rate of 8%. Without significant advancements in screening and treatment, PC is expected to become the second leading cause of cancer mortality by 2020. Although 5% to 10% of all PC cases are attributed to genetic or familial syndromes, the remaining 90% are sporadic. Individuals with new-onset diabetes mellitus have been identified as an important high-risk group that merits screening. The ability to distinguish type 2 diabetes from PC-associated diabetes and the identification of a biomarker for this group would facilitate earlier detection of PC.
