US steel imports indicate growth despite April dip

US steel imports totalled 2.9m tons last month, down 2.3% on March but up 17.5% on the year, according preliminary Census Bureau data. April's figures include 2.3m tons of finished steel, down 2% and up 5%, respectively, from March's final data. The latest data shows that imported semi-finished products increased by 6.6% in April from a year ago to 661,000 tons and for the year to date period, from 2.04m tons to 2.76m tons.
