AK Steel says it intends to temporarily shut down the blast furnace and related steel makingoperations at its Ashland works in Kentucky because cheap imports are "flooding" the market.In line with US labour legislation, the company has served a 60-day notice to hourly and salariedemployees at Ashland warning them of the idling and resulting layoffs. If market conditions do notimprove, the shutdown will begin in mid-December and could last more than six months, AK said.
