Surface Mine Blasting Techniques - An Overview of Indian Trend

Indian surface mines continue to be dependent on Blasting operations for fragmentation. Along with blasting, the operator is faced with the numerous regulations and technical guidelines set by organizations like Directorate General of Mines, Safety, PESO (Petroleum & Explosives Safety Organisation), Min. of Environment- Forest & Climate Change, Court (Apex court, High courts, National Green Tribunal) rulings etc. Over the years, significant input from the explosive maker, R&D institutions, through effective technology transfer had made the burgeoning explosives and accessories demand of India in line with the global developments. In the areas of explosives, SME Explosive had made rapid acceptance and usage in most Indian mines. Similarly, in the areas of accessories and blasting tools, shock tubes and electronic delay initiation system had made the operators to control blast induced vibration and air blast levels in addition to contributing to improved fragmentation. With close cooperation between mines and R&D establishment, site specific solutions could be evolved in the areas of air deck blasting, smooth wall blasting, decking and stemming stabilization, have been developed.Besides, use of instrumentation techniques to test, measure and record blast related issues, have made blasting operations eco-friendly. An attempt has been made in this paper to present the recent developments in blasting for sustainable development of surface mining operations.
