Derivation of EF for Hydraulic & Electric Shovel Engaged in Coal Mines and Estimation of Its Emission Inventory

This paper providesshare of emission inventory due to deployment of hydraulic and electrical in coalmines for excavating and loading coal to dumping equipment. The emission inventories are extrapolated for the period for 2019-20 for one of the coal mining company engaged in coal production in different eight different districts viz. Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Chatra, Latehar, Ranchi, Giridih, situated in the state ofJharkhand. These emission inventories are based on derivation of emission factor for hydraulic and electrical shovels. The findings are based on recent field study for the mining activities of the equipment under study from 2012-2017 in different opencast coalmines of 11 coal-mining complexes of the coal producing company. 7920 data sets for 192 equipment understudy was collected successfully. The emission involved are from Scope-1, Scope-2 and Scope-3 category. Emission factors (EF) for the equipment are derived from measurements, which are consistent with the results. The emission factorsfor Electric shovel (ES), Electric operated Hydraulic Shovel (EoHS) and Diesel operated Hydraulic Shovel (DoHS) on Production basis was found to be 2.17 Kg CO_(2e)/ tes, 3.29 Kg CO_(2e)/ tes & 4.22 Kg CO_(2e)/ tes respectively, on excavated material basis as 1.38 Kg CO_(2e)/ Cum, 2.09 Kg CO _(2e)/ Cum & 2.69 Kg CO_(2e)/ Cum respectively and on working hour basis as 165.63 Kg CO_(2e)/hr, 188.61 Kg CO_(2e)/hr & 227.29 Kg CO_(2e)/ hr. During the study period it was found that 3.84 million tones of CO_(2e) already emitted due to deployment of the equipment understudy with a ratio of 3:2:5 for ES: EoHS: DoHS. The emission inventories extrapolated for the year 2019-20 will be in the range of 0.253 million Tes of CO_(2e). This study will help the coalmines manager in reducing carbon emissions along with innovations in all conceivable facets of sustainability. This study would further help in better understanding of various ideas or initiatives taken by their peers in different opencast coalmines to achieve maximum performance using emission factor so developed.
