BACKGROUND: The systematic replacement of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) has recently been questioned for patients nearing end of life and for patients who have significant improvement in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Given the cost and risk of complications associated with replacement, as well as the evolution of clinical status with time, it is important to evaluate patient characteristics and outcomes in patients receiving ICD replacements.
