TEMPORAL TRENDS OF HEART FAILURE MORTALITY IN MEN AND WOMEN

BACKGROUND: HF is a common cause of female cardiovascular mortality. Earlier reports indicated that HF mortality was higher in men compared to women. We examined the temporal trends in mortality in men and women with a new diagnosis of HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in Ontario residents who were diagnosed with HF in an outpatient setting over a 20-year window, using linked administrative databases. HF is captured through physician billing using a validated algorithm with high sensitivity and specificity for identifying HF events. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality at 1 year. We compared 1-year mortality of men and women in 4 time cohorts (i.e., those diagnosed with HF between April 1, 1994-March 31, 1999, between April 1, 1999-March 31, 2004, between April 1, 2004-March 31, 2009 and between April 1, 2009-March 31, 2014).
