BACKGROUND: Perturbations in insulin-signal transduction is associated with progressive alterations in cardiac structure and function. Since the mechanisms implicated in insulin-resistant mediated cardiomyopathy are not completely understood, we investigated the effects of upregulating heme-oxygenase (HO) with hemin or blocking it with stannous mesoporphyrin on cardiac dysfunction in obese Zucker rats, a model with cardiomyopathy and insulin resistance.
