BACKGROUND: The Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) compared intensive blood pressure control targeting systolic blood pressure (SBP) to <120 mmHg versus the standard target, <14O mmHg. Earlier analysis of this study cohort demonstrated that cardiovascular event rate increased when diastolic blood pressure (DBP) dropped below 55 mmHg, regardless of treatment arm. We therefore examined baseline factors that were associated with falling below this DBP threshold.
