The development and commercialization of rechargeable Li-ion battery technology is the most impressive success of modern electrochemistry.1 Modern life has led to an exponential expansion of the battery market and is driving the development of new families of batteries beyond Li-ion technology. The current and near-future needs for batteries can be categorized as mobile electronics, electro-mobility, large energy storage (grid and sustainable energy applications), and very high energy density systems for drones, unmanned vehicles, robotics, and military uses.
