摘要

A critical knowledge gap in the mechanistic understanding of atmospheric corrosion is the lack of accurate information on the electrochemical kinetics under thin electrolyte films. As opposed to bulk solution electrolytes, thin films pose a more significant challenge to interrogate with the placement of both the reference electrode (RE) and counter electrode (CE) into films less than 1 mm thick. Previous approaches, including the use of a Kelvin probe, a Pt wire, or a saturated calomel electrode (SCE) have produced data hindered in its practicality due to known distortion of the current distribution across the working electrode (WE) and significant ohmic drop.
