Open Citations to Help Advance Free the Science

To further advance its vision to Free the Science, ECS has partnered with the Initiative for Open Citations (I40C), a collaboration between scholarly publishers, researchers and others to promote the unrestricted availability of citation data. 140C was born out of the need to make citations—the links that knit together scientific and cultural knowledge—accessible and machine-readable. The current scholarly communication system often sequesters citation data under unfriendly licenses and they are not machine readable. The ECS-I40C partnership puts reference data from ECS journals in the public domain.
